Children, Teens, and Adolescents with Thyroid Disorders

Although thyroid problems are common in children, they are less common than in adults. Rarely do newborns develop hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid. Neonatal hyperthyroidism is a term used to refer to this illness. Although thyroid disease affects children less frequently than it does adults, the symptoms and indicators might be similar. However, there are a few crucial differences that should be brought to light. One in every 4000 live-conceived babies has inborn hypothyroidism, a disorder that affects newborns during labour. It manifests as a decrease in thyroid function as a result of the thyroid organ's irregular growth. The organ may occasionally be entirely missing. 10% of instances are caused by a catalyst malformation that results in abnormalities in the cerebrum pituitary organ, insufficient hormone production, and iodine deficiency. Innate hypothyroidism can cause substantial mental impairment if the diagnosis is delayed and urgent treatment is not provided. It can also cause developmental and formative defects (cretinism).
