Track 2: Adrenal Diseases:

Adrenal glands are located above the kidneys. They produce estrogen, progesterone, steroids, cortisol, adrenaline, norepinephrine and dopamine. Disease conditions occur due to hyper or hypo secretion of the chemicals. Glucocorticoids and Mineralocorticoids are synthesized in the adrenal cortex. Generally these steroids are synthesized from cholesterol. Reduction and Conjugation steps are the most important in the metabolism of these steroids. Over secretion of Cortisone by the Adrenal glands leads to Cushing’s syndrome, generally common in children. Cushing’s disease leads to tumour in the Adrenal gland. Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia has been seen mostly in recent times. More genetic research is required in these kinds of disorders. Adrenal gland cancers, Adrenoleukodystrophy, Primary hyperaldosteronism are some of the other Adrenal insufficiencies.

Track 3: Bone and Mineral Endocrinology:

Minerals in the body are most important for regulation of proper bone growth as a part of the mineralized matrix. Mal absorption and Vitamin deficiency and most importantly, irregular hormone balance leads to bone disorders like Hypophosphatemia and Hypomagnesaemia. Parathyroid Hormone generally plays an important role. Similarly, dietary insufficiency of Vitamin D, Calcium and Phosphate leads to Rickets. Skeletal deformities and growth irregularities are common in children with Rickets.  Deficiency of Calcium in the serum of neonates is termed Neonatal Hypocalcaemia. Parathyroid Hormone plays a vital role in prevention. Genetic syndromes like William’s syndrome also lead to conditions which alter the strength of the bones. To overcome all these abnormalities, a proper study of Calcium regulation should be performed in view of the changing occupations and life-style of children and adolescents. Advocacy measures are the most important in termination of any kind of illness. Bone abnormalities are also common due to tumours. Hence, treatment measures should be devised appropriately to overcome side effects. Abnormal increase in the storage of Vitamins in the body leads to Hypervitaminosis.

It is a toxic irregularity linked to bone growth and regulation. Osteoporosis, Osteomalacia and Osteogenesis are the most important and recurring bone disorders especially in juveniles. Endocrinological research in treating these conditions, which have been more prominent with change in life-style of people, is gaining more importance.

Track 4: Autoimmune Endocrinology:

The dysfunction of immune cells in destroying the body cells is called as Autoimmunity. Destruction of a body organ, abnormal growth or Changes in the function of the organ is the manifestation of an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmunity in endocrine glands leads to Endocrinal autoimmunity. These diseases mostly co-exist along with hormonal insufficiencies. Addison’s disease is caused by the destruction of adrenal cells by autoimmune mechanisms. Kids with Diabetes have a higher risk of autoimmune disorders like Thyroid, Celiac or Addison’s disease. Similar autoimmunity in the thyroid gland leads to a condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, leading to hypothyroidism. Sensitivity towards certain growth hormones also occurs due to autoimmunity. These are the major concerns which are seeing a drastic increase in children. Diagnosis, treatment and Prognosis play an important role in maintaining a disease free society.

Track 5: Diabetes-technology and Therapeutics:

With growing population, diseases and their manifestations have also increased. Diabetes, a metabolic syndrome caused due to the abnormalities in insulin secretion form the pancreas has become a major problem in the world. Obesity directly linked to diabetes is becoming more and more common. Juvenile diabetes is also a major concern these days. The Epidemiology and pathogenesis of Diabetes in order to educate the world with the facts especially in the underprivileged areas would be an effective step in curbing the disease. Neonatal hypoglycaemia is another form of the disease occurring in infants. Recent trends in the Therapy of the disease and preventive measures should be advocated.

Track 6: Pituitary

Pituitary gland is the most important gland in the human body, which regulates the growth, temperature, metabolism of the human body. Accurate longitudinal growth assessment in children is important in the diagnosis of pituitary gland abnormalities. Gigantism is due to the over secretion of pituitary, which in most cases cannot be cured. Deficiency or hypo secretion of Growth Hormone leads to stunted growth in children, which can be treated. Acromegaly is the abnormal growth of hands, feet and face due to the excess secretion of growth hormone. A rare non-cancerous tumour in the centre of the adrenal gland is termed as Pheocromocytoma. High blood pressure and other lethal bodily metabolisms occur, which can be reversed by the surgical removal of the adrenal glands. Benign tumour in the pituitary towards the spinal cord is termed Craniopharyngioma. Radiosurgery is the most effective method in such cases. Extreme thirst and excessive urination rarely occur in the form of Central Diabetes insipidus, which is also caused due to Pituitary insufficiencies. Vasopressin is the major hormone required in curbing central Diabetes Insipidus.

Track 7: Reproductive Endocrinology

With a rise of change in diet and lifestyle among adolescents, gynic concerns both in male and female have increased. Various problems like primary dysmenorrheaPCODDelayed puberty etc. are increasing among the female adolescents. Sex hormone replacement therapy has become an abuse rather than medicine in adolescents. Hypogonadism is the reduction of hormones by the specific organs. Genetic aberrations in the Androgen receptors are another rare condition which might lead to impotency if left untreated. Another rare syndrome, where one of the chromosome X is missing in females, is coined Turner’s syndrome. Similarly, Cryptorchidism in males, where the testes remains undescended from birth is another rare condition. Apart from these, psychosexual disorders like gender dysphoria, where the person believes he/she should not be of the sex they are, which ultimately leads to anxiety and stress. Treating at endocrine level in managing the stress and anxiety caused can be an effective approach. Adolescent Sexual health is gaining more importance as complications are increasing.

Track 8: Thyroid

It is the most important hormone and endocrine gland in a human body. Thyroid hormones act throughout the body effecting metabolism, growth and development and body temperature. Thyroid releases thyroid hormones, T3, T4 and TSH. Adequate thyroid in infancy and Childhood is necessary for brain development. Insufficiencies in thyroid can be detected in pre-term infants, a major breakthrough in science. Goitre – an abnormal swelling of the thyroid gland generally due to Iodine deficiency is termed as Goitre, mostly prevalent in endemic areas. Grave’s disease is an autoimmune condition where destruction of the thyroid gland takes place. Presence of thyroid tissue in other parts of the body is termed Ectopic thyroid, a rare disease. Novel therapy and research play an important role in eradicating most of the deficient syndromes.

Track 9: Genetic and genomic science

Genetics in recent days have evolved to a great extent. The use of genetic screening for preterm birth defects is a boon to the society. Congenital abnormalities are also detectable by genetic mapping. Personalised medicine in terms of gene sequencing is gaining more support throughout the world. Reproductive defects can be treated by mapping the spermatogenesis in males and similarly females. Embryogenesis is a new science which needs more awareness. Genetics are an evolutionary solution to maintain a healthy society.

Track 10: Best Practices in Pediatric Endocrinology

Overpopulation, life-style changes, Diet differences, lack of exercise etc. have rendered the present generation humans more prone to diseases than ever. Hormonal imbalances are the most common among these. With change in the generation and resistance among humans, treatment techniques need a great deal of change. The management of this change in therapy among children, adolescents and geriatric people should be given greater concern. Rare Endocrinological diseases must be addressed in a much better way as incidences are seeing an increase ever since. Wireless transmitting devices have become a part and parcel of our daily lives. Occupational disorders caused due to them are being researched in a broader prospect. One of the most commonly occurring diseases especially among working young women and children is Vitamin D deficiency. Occupational and life style changes are the only solution to such deficiencies which need to be tackled in a broader way. Most underprivileged areas due to the lack of source of information and guidance are seeing no much advancement. Concerns like these should be prioritized and dealt with accordingly.

Importance and Scope

Pediatric Endocrinology is a medical subspecialty which deals with variations of physical growth and sexual development in childhood, as well as diabetes and other disorders of the endocrine glands. Due to a drastic change in behaviour and eating habits, hormone imbalance has become a vital science. It is hence necessary to initiate advanced therapy and lifestyle changes to curb the numerous disorders.

Global endocrinology drugs market is expected to witness lucrative growth over the forecast period owing to increasing prevalence of endocrine diseases. These diseases include endocrine gland associated disorders such as Addison’s disease, gigantism, goiter, Cushing’s syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, acromegaly, thyroiditis, and osteomalacia. Rising adolescent population base which is more prone to such diseases due to hormonal imbalances also tends to drive the growth of endocrinology drugs market. Unhealthy lifestyle characteristics such as high intake of cholesterol, work stress and weight gain which ultimately leading to malfunctioning of the endocrine system, inception of new drug delivery systems, extensive research and development, and the rise in disposable income propels the growth of endocrinology drugs market. Rapid uptake of novel dosage forms and formulations of existing drugs is expected to increase number of patients for treatment of endocrine disorders thus leading to market growth. On the contrary, illegal use of certain drugs for performance enhancement by sports professionals poses a threat to society thereby hindering the growth of endocrinology drugs market.

Prevelance of Endocrine Disorders Globally

In United States, more than 25,000 children die every year. Nearly 15,000 children are treated for endocrinal disorders every year. The global endocrinal healthcare market touches around $2.03 billion. Endocrinal associations are being funded annually about $212,286 million to $407,716 million for endocrinal research

Why Phoenix, USA?

GBI Research's analysis shows that the overall global endocrinology market was valued at $6.0 billion in 2010. It grew from $4.0 billion in 2004 at a CAGR of 6.9%. The market is expected to witness comparatively moderate growth with a CAGR of 8.0% between 2010 and 2018, and is estimated to reach $11.2 billion in 2018.
